Giving and Receiving
Feedback
Why is giving and receiving feedback one of the most challenging activities?
Many people have had the experience of “people telling us something for our own
good” or “chastising us” and calling it constructive criticism. The experience
is awkward and uncomfortable for the receiver as well as the sender.
Leaders, however, have developed the art of effective feedback. They describe
observed behavior and its impact without evaluation or judgment. Their
intention is to support, not control and manipulate. Effective leaders share
feedback in an authentic, candid and compassionate fashion with the goal of
stimulating mutual learning and action. When giving feedback, leaders listen
and ask questions, more than they tell.
Effective leaders also receive feedback openly, creating a valuable opportunity
for their own learning and growth. They respond instead of react, and manage
their emotional response. Leaders are eager for feedback and “mine for gold”
seeking insight into areas for their own personal development, in order to
enhance their overall effectiveness.
